DISCIPLINE

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord Jesus Christ,

Some time back I was asked to give a study on this topic by an engineer so I was prompted to work on this topic. I felt this may give you a new sense of obedience to the word of God with that hope I am giving all the reference for this study on DISCIPLINE. It is not that easy to go through a study of this nature without self discipline also. But I strongly believe every disciple of Jesus will be having a disciplined life.

The word "DISCIPLINE": Heb 12:5 - 7

(Prov 1:2 NIV) "for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;"

1. God speaks to us or helping us to hear His voice in-order to correct us or to discipline us as in (Deu 4:36 NIV) "From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire."

  • Also see, Exo 19:9,19; 20:18 - 22; 24:16; Heb 12:19

2. We are having a responsibility in disciplining our children in the ways of God. In (Deu 11:2 NIV) "Remember today that your children were not the ones who saw and experienced the discipline of the LORD your God: his majesty, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm;"

  • (Deu 21:18 NIV) "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him,"

3. If God is taking time to corrects a person it is a blessing. (Job 5:17 NIV) ""Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty."

(Psa 94:12 NIV) "Blessed is the man you discipline[1], O LORD, the man you teach from your law;"

Also see, Ps 94:12; Prov 3:11 -12; Heb 12:5 - 6; James 1:12; Rev 3:19

  1. The treatment for a son only brings correction of God.

Heb 12:6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

    • (Prov 3:11 NIV) "My son[1], do not despise the Lord's discipline and do not resent his rebuke,"

The word "SON": Also see, Job 5:17; Ps 94:12; Heb 12:5 - 6; Rev 3:19; ": Deu 8:5; 2 Sam 7:14; Prov 13:24

    • (Prov 5:12 NIV) "You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction!"

    • (Prov 5:23 NIV) "He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly."

    • (Prov 19:18 NIV) "Discipline[1] your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death."

    • (Heb 12:5 NIV) "And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,"

    • (Heb 12:7 NIV) "Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons[1]. For what son[2] is not disciplined by his father?"

    • (Heb 12:8 NIV) "If you are not disciplined (and everyone[1] undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons."

  1. God is not correcting any one because of His anger or wrath but some time we may feel like that because of our own failures and guilty consciousness.
    • (Psa 6:1 NIV) " O LORD, do not rebuke[1] me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath."
    • The word "REBUKE": Ps 38:1; Jer 10:24

      • (Psa 38:1 NIV) "A psalm of David. A petition. O LORD, do not rebuke[1] me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath."

      • The word "REBUKE": see Ps 6:1

      • (Psa 39:11 NIV) "You rebuke and discipline men for their sin; you consume their wealth like a moth-- each man is but a breath. Selah"

    6. The wise person always corrects himself as per the word of God but not the foolish person despise correction. As in (Prov 1:7 NIV) "The fear of the LORD[1] is the beginning of knowledge, but fools[2] despise wisdom and discipline."

    • (Prov 12:1 NIV) "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid."

    • The word "FOOLS": "Fool" in Scripture refers to one who is arrogant and self-sufficient, one who orders his life as if there were no God. See e.g. Luke 12:16 - 21. The rich man was not mentally deficient, but he was a "fool" because he supposed that his soul could live on the things in the barn, giving no thought to his eternal well-being.

    7. (Prov 6:23 NIV) "For these commands[1] are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,"

    "COMMANDS": Also see, Ps 19:8; 119:105; 2 Pet 1:19

    • (Prov 10:17 NIV) "He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray."

    • (Prov 13:18 NIV) "He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored."

    • (Prov 13:24 NIV) "He who spares the rod. [1] hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him."

    8. The word "ROD": As a tool to discipline see in these verses. Prov 19:18; 22:15; 23:13; 29:15,17

    • (Prov 15:5 NIV) "A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence."

    • The danger of not yielding to the correction is not very good. (Prov 15:10 NIV) "Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die."

    • Ignoring the discipline is not good for us. To gain more and more understanding we need corrections. (Prov 15:32 NIV) "He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding."

    A. "DISCIPLINE": Prov 13:24; Jer 30:11

    • (Prov 22:15 NIV) "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline[1] will drive it far from him."

    B.The Word "DISCIPLINE": Prov 23:13 -14

    • (Prov 23:13 NIV) "Do not withhold discipline[1] from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die."

    C."DISCIPLINE": Prov 22:6,15

    • (Prov 23:23 NIV) "Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding."

    • (Prov 29:17 NIV) "Discipline your son, and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul."

    • (Jer 17:23 NIV) "Yet they did not listen or pay attention; they were stiff-necked and would not listen or respond to discipline."

    D. See: Jer 17:23: Jer 7:24 - 26; 11:10; 16:12; 19:15

    • (Jer 30:11 NIV) "I am with you[1] and will save you,' declares the LORD. 'Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you[2], I will not completely destroy[3] you[4]. I will discipline you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.'"

    • The Word "DESTROY": No O.T. prophet is more positive of the destruction of Israel's political economy and the consequent exile of the nation than is Jeremiah, but he is also insistent that the disaster of the hour does not mean the nation's dissolution. Repeatedly the prophet assures the nation that God will not "completely destroy" Israel (cp. 4:27; 5:10,18; 30:11; 46:28). The perpetuity of Israel as a nation is thus assured.
    • "YOU": Jer 46:27 - 28

    9. Rejecting the correction of God has its own efforts as we from this verse. (Jer 32:33 NIV) "They turned their backs[1] to me and not their faces; though I taught them again and again, they would not listen or respond to discipline."

    • The Word "BACKS": Cp. Ezek 8:16

    10. God is not having any negative thought of destroying us here. (Jer 46:28 NIV) "Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, for I am with you," declares the LORD. "Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy [1] you. I[2] will discipline[3] you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.""

      • The Word "DESTROY": Jer 4:27; Amos 9:8 - 9
      • The Word "I": Here is one of the many answers to the question: "Did God reject his people?" (Rom 11:1).

(2 Tim 1:7 NIV) "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity[1], but a spirit of power[2], of love[3] and of self-discipline."

      • The Word "TIMIDITY": Rom 8:15; 1 John 4:18

      • The Word "EVERYONE": Cp. 1 Pet 5:9

    11. (Heb 12:11 NIV) "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful[1]. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness[2] and peace for those who have been trained by it."

      • The Word "PAINFUL": Cp. 1 Pet 1:6
      • The Word "RIGHTEOUSNESS": See 1 John 3:7, note

      • (Rev 3:19 NIV) "Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline[1]. So be earnest, and repent[2]."

      • The Word "REPENT": <Repentance:> v. 19. (Mat 3:2; Acts 17:30, note)

    12. God is disciplining the rebellious people also. (Hosea 5:2 NIV) "The rebels are deep in slaughter. I will discipline all of them."

May the Lord help each one of us to get the right discipline so that where God is there He can take us also with Him in the Second Coming of God.
